Ghostscript won't open in script

Hi

I'm not sure where to post this one but here goes. I have a gmt script with the following command at the end

gv $plot

where $plot is defined as plot="plot.ps". Ghostview refuses to open when I run the script, however if I run the command

gv plot.ps

ghostview opens displaying the image plot.ps.

I have tried using gs and the same is also true.

Has anyone else experienced this or a similar problem?
