Nothing after login 8.10

I've re-installed a couple times on an old P4 that work would have tossed and it seems to be loading 8.10 properly. After the login screen, all I see is a nice blank tan screen where I can amuse myself with the moving the mouse around, but nothing else. I've loaded older versions of ubuntu on laptops in the past, but always got farther than this ??

Any ideas from anyone?

btw - in great anticipation of my new toy, I've gone and bought myself a new 22" monitor - kind of a bummer to have trouble from the start :) - it did the same thing with a different monitor, so I think I've ruled that out.
