Hey, just installed ubuntu on my dell laptop but for some reason any icon which is on my desktop; I am unable to click to open it or drag around but i can still create a highlighting box on the desktop. Does anyone know how to fix this?

By the way I installed compiz fusion and i'm unsure if that is the reason.

It's a safe option to disable compiz temporarily to check if that may be the resulting issue.
If you are unsure how to do so, navigate to Syste -> Preferences -> Appearance.
Click the 'Visual Effects' tab, and click "None".

If doing this allows expected functionality with the desktop icons, you have found the culprit!

I too occasionally have the problem. The most recent occurance was after I resumed from suspend. Is this a known bug?

I'm hesitant to turn of compiz as it seems to lose all the customization when i re-enable it.

This post (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=936108) also mentions the bug.

Edit: This IS a known bug. A workaround is to kill/end the nautilus process. It restarts automatically and the desktop icons become clickable once more.
