hey all,

i'm very new to the linux OS, and mearly have light dabbles with ubuntu.
what im trying todo is create a silent and very low power box that i can leave torrents and packet shaping running on 24/7

i've got a HP T5500 thin client. 733mhz crusoe processor, ram has been upgraded to 512mb, and the supplied 32mb flash drive has been replaced with an 8gb 15mb/s CF card.

basically, ANYTHING i do with the thin client and ubuntu ends up taking substantiall longer than it should - most things takes around 20-30secs to load.
'top' says practically 0% cpu load when idle, yet goes through the roof when anything is loaded. once the app is loaded, the cpu load drops back to ~0% again.

so - whats my limitation, the cpu, or the CF card?
is there a certain way to improve performance?
do i install ubuntu asif the CF card was a normal HDD, or via the persistant USB installer?

any help appreciated!
