Hello Everyone,

I've been trawling the forum extensively looking for hints and tips.

Last week I upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10, I had issues with X straight away, I've worked through most of them. When running apps from a terminal I get

Xlib: extension "RANDR" Missing on Display ":0.0".

I understand this will come up with xinerama enabled. I can live with that as long as it doesn't cause issues...?

When I CTRL-ALT-F1 to F6 I don't get a terminal.

My main issue (aside from no compiz with Xinerama) is my mouse dies. Oh yes. It can't be tracked down to one thing, sometimes after an hour, sometimes after 5 min. Some thing is a precursor to it, but I don't know what. Here are some examples:-

If I switch in and out of Virtualbox WinXP it dies.
If I switch between windows (xterm, freemind, xfm) it dies
If I open Firefox with a flash webpage, dies.
If I'm working happily it will die.

Then I must CTRL-ALT-BKSPCE and it's away again.

It happens in Gnome, KDE, XFCE (current desktop)
It happens with USB Mouse and Ps2 Mouse.
It happens on clean 8.10 install
It Happens on Upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10
It happens on a MSI Motherboard with AMD
It happens on Gigabyte Motherboard with Intel

The only hardware the same is two Nvidia Video Cards, PCI-E x 2 9500GT

However, They seem to be having no issues.

When the mouse freezes I can still use keyboard (if in Gnome or KDE, not in XFCE as I haven't got keyboard setup right). I'm having to exit X-Windows up to 10 times a day. ARRGGHHH.. Any hints assistance most appreciated. There is nothing in the logs to hint at why.

I understand that under 8.10 the way hardware is managed has changed... Perhaps this is where I'm going wrong. xorg.conf attached.

Cheers

Hi!

I too have the same problem! I can live with no effects on multi monitors with xinerama enabled but my mouse freezing is not that cool! :(
I really do not like the idea that I have to exit X alot per day.
Would really appreciate some help.

I think however it has something to do with multi monitors (xinerama). I have another system, same nvidia driver (different card though) on one monitor. No problems there, effect and everything working. I can't stand having only one monitor on my main machine. If the problem is not fixed in a couple of weeks I'm moving back to suse or fedora ... ah mandrake 8.2 were the good days :P

system:
q6600 @ 4x2.40GHz
4Gbyte RAM @ 800MHz
XFX 8800GTS 320MB
2xSamsung SyncMaster 2232BW
Ubuntu 8.10

Just to follow up. I was having a good time with the Nvidia Binary driver, however, GoogleEarth refused to work (segmentation faults) so I went back to nvidia-glx-177.

Freezing all the time, whilst with the nvidia driver it wasn't freezing too much (almost bearable) the 177 driver makes it impossible to work.

I'm having an identical problem (xinerama, twin monitors, an NVIDIA card, no terminals with CTRL+FX and hourly mouse freezes): has anyone managed to make any progress on this front?

I have the identical problem also with GeForce 8600 GT, I use the recommended diver 177 suggested when I first installed ubuntu 8.10, there was the icon showed up at the system tray. I enabled the recommended driver.
