Looks like overkill for a Linux box...

Not really means i can play pretty much any linux game maxed out.

I will have windows on it too for games linux can't play.

I can understand if you use it for Windows. As an aside, I tend to smile now-a-days when my brother (non-geek type) tells me about his latest "rig".

Him: "Bro, check this out. Built it meself. Quad-core through and through, Nvidia X99000XLT PRO SLI graphics, 8 GIGS of RAM, 1 terabyte 10000rpm SATA drive..."

Me: "Um yeah, looks neat. You even have a little neon case fan. Cool! Check out my "rig". Pentium III clocked at 700mhz, 256mb RAM, 10 GB hard drive, Intel on board graphics chip...this puppy serves as my personal firewall, ssh server and router into which I can remote from anywhere in the world. Pretty slick eh?"

Him: "...."

Eh, different strokes for different folks.

Make sure that PSU isn't some unbranded crap because they like to kill components, even when they don't blow. (they lack stuff which reduces ripple so it stresses your motherboard filtering it)

Well i will probably update the power supply and graphics card as i go along, thanks for the advice i will check it out and google it when i get it.

Looks nice, you can never have too much power =D
On a side note I recommend thermaltake PSUs. I chose a 500W one for my case, it's silent all the time and is a modest black with a gold fan cover, so looks good if you are into pretty case designs/layouts.

Thanks i will take note of that and have a look.

I just got my baby back.

My Mac Pro has a new logic board and two new Quad-core Xeon's in them with a GeForce 5600 FX. I still buy the RAM since Apple charges around $1000 per 4GB stick. (OWC charges $1000 for 8x4GB sticks).

I can say that I legally run OS X on a very powerful (and very expensive, sorry Apple) computer.

Two quad cores? Crickey what do you need so much power for?

Snow Leopard takes advantage of both processors and all cores. Can't wait till it comes out. I've been using a development trail version as it is, and it seems very very fast.

Christ you must have a lot of money for all that gear then. If only i did heh.

Call Apple and tell them you intend to install your own RAM and HD's. They'll sell it to you that way and remove the cost of those parts. The two Quads are around $1000 together and the Graphics card is $2000. Those are two very high end, and proprietary parts from Apple. The RAM is just FB-DIMM and the HD's are common, and don't cost nearly as much as Apple charges, and in fact, they give you the HD mounts for free anyways.

I can't even afford $100 at the moment heh since i just got that new pc i put in the OP (that only worked out to about £379...which is a lot of money to me).

Aye, it was a lot, but a one time investment... for a long time...

Considering I can still run Tiger with fast speeds on a G4 that was never meant to run OS X at all, this thing should be good for the next 14 or 15 years (estimate).

Nice system very similar to mine. I have the same MB & CPU but 4GB ram & 9600GT.

I can't help but wonder why you'd get such good parts and then buy a crappy GPU like a 9500GT. That's like, a Home Theater PC card. When it comes to games, a cheaper dual core and a 9800GT would be a much better combo. Of course, if you're doing video editing, then it's a good machine.

I would have to agree on that. A 9600GT or 8800GT will provide much better performance at slightly higher cost.

Wow, you realize you're a geek when you read a title saying something about a baby and your first instinct is to think that someone's getting a new PC :P

In any case, nice specs, I know what it's like waiting for stuff to arrive :P It's a killer lol.

Well it is supposed to come before 1PM tomorrow, dayam i'm excited haha!

The reason i got that video card...it came with a 9400 included in price, so i put in an extra £10 and got a 9500, bargain tbh, i do have a 8800 but its a real low end one so it's a bit rubbish.

I plan to wait a bit and get a true top-end nvidia card anyway so it doesn't bother me right now :)

Why does a Linux box need less? Surely you mean overkill for a home user? That spec wouldn't be overkill, running Linux in a corporate server environment.

ELD
November 10th, 2008, 02:33 PM
I wouldn't say it's even overkill for a Home user, what i want to play say quake 4 completely maxed out, alien arena, quake wars etc etc.

Still many many things in linux that requires a bit of power.
