I didn’t have success with earlier versions of ubuntu.
Now I want to see if 8.10 i386 is any easier.
md5sum verified the check value.
The burned CD had “no errors found”.
ubuntu-linux-i386.iso installed and went thru the “restart now”
The update manager found 34 updates and installed them.
The screen resolution after the installation was 800 x 600,
instead of the appropriate 1280 x 1024.
How do I change the resolution to the proper 1280 x 1024?

In most cases you should see a pop up box in the upper right corner, which would invite you to enable the drivers for your graphics.
If not,you have to install them using synaptic or add-remove program.

Sorry, not enough detail for me to succeed.
I can't do the simplest things; neither can ubuntu.
But I found vlc in the synaptic package manager
list and installed it with its dependencies(I think).
But it just gives a quick flash view of a black
screen when I tell it to open my DVD disk.
It doesn't play my DVD.
What's missing?

I downloaded a file Xerox-DocuPrint_P12-ljet2p.ppd from
http://www.linuxprinting.org
for a printer on my parallel port.
How do I install a driver from a .ppd file?
I asked this question last summer and was referred to http://localhost:631, and it worked,
but that link is gone now.

I found the sun jdk6 java on the synaptic package manager list and
installed it and it seems to work and is really encouraging.
But I really need the P12 printer to work so I can print my plots.
And I really need the screen resolution 1280 x 1024 so I can see the plots sufficiently.
Can anyone help me? Or do I just give up again?

Now I am trying to succeed an another computer with a little more success.
The installation recognizes 1680 x 1050 for the resolution, and the
characters get sharp when I change the refresh rate from 60Hz to 70Hz.
That’s a real plus that ubuntu can recognize the screen reaolution.
But I still need to know how to fix the other computer with the 1280 x 1024 screen.
I installed sun-java-jdk6 from the synaptic package manager list,
and the plots are nice and sharp.
This computer is to use an HP4350n printer on the local ethernet;
I found hplip on the synaptic package manager list and
it has both the green-shaded box and the small ubuntu emblem.
I would have to guess that the green shading in the box means that it is installed, but
I don’t know what the small ubuntu emblem to the right of the box means.
How do I make the HP4350n with known IP address work?
I.e.,how do I connect it up so the print command knows it is there?

Over 100 views, and no one seems to know how to
add the choice of a 1280 x 1024 screen resolution,
or a Xerox DocuPrint P12 printer to the parallel port,
or an HP 4350n Printer to the local ethernet,
and I really don’t want to give up.
But it looks like I might have to give up again.
