Hello,

I had one of my towers fail on my tonight. I have placed the hard drive from my Ubuntu x86_64 board into my i586 computer.

When I boot up all goes well until after Grub when I get the error "This kernel requires an x86_64 CPU but only detected a i586 CPU."

Can someone provide me with some ideas to make ubuntu grab a new kernel for this new CPU without data loss?

Cheers,

Brent.

Actually, it's not the kernel anymore. Any program on your harddrive is x86_64 so they won't run on your i686 hardware. The best way is to do a backup of your personal files and reinstall it, i686 version.
