Do you have a "baby"?

Do you have a 'baby?' By which I do not mean an offspring, yours or otherwise. I mean an inanimate object that you love, perhaps unreasonably, worry about its safety and rely on in some way. Could be your bike or car, your camera, your gun or nunchucks, your laptop, etc.

Why is it special? Why do you worry about it? How do you rely on it?

I fell in love with an Ibanez AF95 (http://www.ibanez.com/hollow/guitar.aspx?m=AF95) I recently bought. It's my baby. I always wanted a proper archtop; this one sounds great, plays great and I can afford it!

I worry about it because it's my first hollow body and it's fragile compared to my Tele (but what isn't?)

I rely on it as a creative outlet. Especially this guitar because it demands to be played properly. I can't stand to do anything sloppily on this guitar.

I think I'll be the next Chet Atkins for sure (right after I've designed my own processor, debugged the entire GPL software library and determined whether vim or emacs is better)

Definitely my laptop. I love it nearly as much as my children. More recently I've begun to fall in love with my Washburn banjo. It just has something none of my guitars have. How über redneck of me.

No. I have hobbies, and I like doing things, but I have stopped myself from becoming more attached with them than with people.

I rented that one or something very like it in five string a few years ago when I was travelling. Much nicer to play than a Yamaha RBX765, which I owned at the time. They both sounded great but the Ibanez felt much "tighter."

These days I'm more in to guitar, though. Easier to practice with casually, imho.

Predictably I am going to say my computers.
My current one is called Vinnie. He is named after Vinnie Jones, because he is one tough cookie. There are tougher computer/ people, but h is definitely better than average.
My last one was Bruce, a Dell Dimension E521 named after Bruce Willis. He wasn't the most powerful machine, but like Bruce in any die hard movie, he just kept going, and never gives in!

Yeah, I expected that. Given the crowd, I considered asking people to think of something OTHER than their laptops, but on second thought, it seemed arbitrary.

I'm a technician. Computers come and go and most of the ones I've owned were cobbled together from 'dead' machines at work. That said, I'd probably be sad if my ancient little Stinkpad X30 ever gave up the ghost. I expect that thing to run for another five years, then ten more after that!
