If a remote site can scan your system, I would begin to fear.

There was a thread on the same thing like a couple months ago... but it is disappointing there are people who fall for this... oh well.

You better download their software, that says your problem is critical!

I saw that myself a few months ago, I just laughed because with linux you can obviously know that isn't real, but aparently alot of college students that run windows xp fall for all the time.

I downloaded that anyway and booted into Vista to use it. The program cleaned up my Windows partition very nicely!

The program must be powerful because it has "powerfull" in the web address.

Well, I'm reckless. You know... porn doesn't give you much choice.
But seriously, by having Wine installed what are the damages that can be done?

Ever noticed how the popups mimic an XP theme, that usually differs in some detail from the them you're using? Even when I was using XP regularly on my "day to day" laptop, the theme was a give-away, because the laptop's default theme was different to the "standard" XP theme.

It's sad that some people can't differentiate between pop-ups and a genuine system warning. Some people just aren't capable of understanding the concept that someone is trying to trick them.

I actually had a classmate install that stuff.

Her: my computer is slow, buggy, I get pop-ups and warnings all the time, and certain features are disabled. *Shows how the "new..." submenu is missing when she right-clicks.*
Me: Are you using any antivirus.
Her: Yes, I have *racks her memory* A... AV... AVG?
Me: *Checks the taskbar and discovers that she is still using AVG 7.5*
Me: You're using an old version, you should update this.
Her: Also, I keep getting warnings from Antivirus 2009.
Me: You didn't download it, did you?
Her: Yes, I did five days ago, but the warnings didn't stop.
Me: That thing puts so many viruses on your computer, it's not even funny. Those warnings are just popup ads.
Her: What?
Me: You know how sometimes, when you're browsing the Internet, you get popup advertisements?
Her: Yes.
Me: That's what those warnings are.
Her: But they didn't look like popup ads!
Me: Someone was trying to trick you. So now your computer is probably infested with viruses.
Her: [Horrified] Oh no!
Me: You just have more viruses than average. Most computers have 30 viruses each.
Her: So how do I uninstall them? Is there something I should delete? Can I remove them from the control panel?
Me: These things were created by people who didn't want you to get rid of them.

none... the random program i was installing i was kind of going 'this is probably just some crappy FOSS program compiled to include malware, but whatever'.

It can modify anything to which your user has write access, and read anything your user can read. So as long as you don't care if all your personal files get wiped/scrambled/shipped off to a remote site, then nothing to worry about... ;)

You will want to disable the Z:\ drive.

Heh, yeah I got that on my iPod Touch once. They really need to do a user agent check.

Those are awful scams, which try to scam computer newbies into giving their credit card numbers away to fix fake problems. It's awful what people do to make money :|

Guys, I see a niche here! You all have seen these website that scan your Windows XP for viruses, the "find" them , etc.
BUT! These nice little helper websites are for Windows only. I propose we create our own powerfullantivirusscan.com but for Ubuntu (with Ubuntu theme), so Ubuntu users can benefit, too!
"Your /etc/sysctl.conf is infected! You have a trojan in /opt! Firefox is infected with Linux32.CookieStealer.B! Click here for powerfullvirusscanner.deb!"

I can see that happening in the future.
