Live CD white/multicoloured screen

When I boot from the Kubuntu 8.10 Desktop CD all I get is a screen which looks like the attached. I expect I can install using the Alternate CD , (I've upgraded at least 3 times, I feel it's time to do a fresh install), but given my hardware seems far from exotic I'm rather disappointed by the failure of the Desktop CD and was wondering if anyone could shed any light on why it fails to work. I tried Graphics safe mode and got the same result.

Motherboard: Asus P5K
Graphics: Nvidia 7950 GT
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
