I cannot init Kate or KWrite on root account

Hi,
I am using KUbuntu 8.10.
When I try to run Kate or KWrite in a root console I get this error:

No protocol specified
kate: cannot connect to X server :0.0


How can I fix it? Is this a bug?

So I take it there is no solution here?
I was having the same problem this weekend attempting to edit fstab. I ended up setting the permissions for fstab and fstab~ to allow me to edit using Kate launching from the K menu. Then I reset the permissions back after the edit.

Any takers?

Maybe a fix in 9.04? I will be upgrading soon anyway and will see.
