I think the same as Windows: you have to download an extension for Firefox. Then you can watch the downloaded videos with vlc

You install the Video Download Helper (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006) add-on for Firefox.

Or install and use youtube-dl (http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/youtube-dl) ;)

Or, you can watch the video you want, then while the window is still open, copy the file from /tmp.

You do not need extensions to do that...
Watch the video online. After that check the tmp folder in your file system. The video will be there. Just copy it from there to another folder. That's it! Very, very simple... :-)

I use KeepVid (http://keepvid.com/)

Just drag the bookmarklet into your bookmarks.

Play a YouTube (etc) video, click the Keep It! bookmark and it generates a download link.

Hell, haven't you noticed that each time you watch a youtube video it gets stored in /tmp under the name of Flash****
Copy the file to desktop before watchinv :)

No, I haven't.

However, I did notice, after watching a video, that there is a large recent file in Firefox's cache folder. Granted, it has a funky name like "A4088D85d01" and are of an unknown type, but a quick file rename fixes that problem.

BTW, this technique also works in Windows. Haven't tried on a Mac, though.
