I tried installing ubuntu 8.10 both from the live cd and the alternate install. each time, i can get to the login screen, but the desktop won't load. it just sits at a blank screen. the text of the login name looks smaller then normal, is that part of the problem? also, i installed it using ext3, should i try something else? what's the best way to fix this problem?

Did the Live CD boot and run correctly?

Probably a "vga=" boot option is needed for your graphics chip. Try vga=788 for example. Here are all the options:

If you don't know how to add an option to the kernel boot line, post back. It wouldn't hurt to share what kind of graphics chip you are using, either.

i'm trying to add that line in,

i hit esc to go into the grub menu, and i edit the first boot option. i press 'o' to add a line, and 'e' to add vga=788. when i press esc and go back into the menu, the command doesn't stay. and if i press 'b' to boot the computer restarts, and the command is gone again.

ah,

Boot in rescue mode
select root shell prompt
sudo apt-get remove compiz
sudo apt-get remove compiz-core
exit
resume

i did that, and also xfix and fsck... now i can see my desktop :)
