The files may be there, or at least parts of them. Try apt://foremost on it.

Did you really think you could get away with working for two months on a project and not doing backups on a regular schedule? It is rather less material that your computer thrashed a USB stick. It could have thrashed your hard disk as well. Also, are you quite sure that a 'hard shutdown' is the proper way to recover from a X server freeze?
