View Full Version : [ubuntu] 8.04 automatic updates can't be authenticated!

November 6th, 2008, 08:49 PM
Had 25 updates for my 8.04 system waiting for me when I got back from vacation. Went to apply them and got an "can't be authenticated" warning message. Wasn't clear which ones or if none of them could be authenticated.

I suspect its a problem with the repositories and will resolve if I try again later, but wanted to post a note so someone can look into it in case one of the repository machines has been hacked.

Now I'm concerned. Tried automatic updates again.

Updates to things like apt, gvfs, libgtk2.0-common are in the NOT AUTHENTICATED list.

What is going on?

I am not allowing this update to proceed!

What repos are you using? Can you post your /etc/apt/sources.list ?

Doesn't appear to be anything I've not been using since 6.06.

Problem seems to be the key servers. Playing around with symantic, I'm getting a lot of GPG errors if I click the Reload button.

Are udates working today for any 8.04 users? Particularly libgtk2.0-common.

I notice apt is no longer in the NOT AUTHENTICATED list, while it was this morning. So perhaps repo maintainers are aware and working the issue.

Please post here the output of this command:

apt-cache policy libgtk2.0-common

Sorry I'm late getting back to this, but the issue seems fixed now with some infor I'd found in other threads.

But doing it now, I get:

Installed: 2.12.9-3ubuntu5
Candidate: 2.12.9-3ubuntu5
Version table:
*** 2.12.9-3ubuntu5 0
500 http://ubuntu.media.mit.edu hardy-updates/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
2.12.9-3ubuntu2 0
500 http://ubuntu.media.mit.edu hardy/main Packages

Issue seems to have been fixed by a couple of
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
cycles and a recent update to Update Manager.
