View Full Version : [ubuntu] Kernel question

All,

I have narrowed down a problem I seem to have with only newer versions of Ubuntu (Feisty and newer). I believe the problem is related to the Linux Kernel. Edgy (which uses Kernel 2.6.17) is the only version of Ubuntu I can use without my system experiencing the random hard freeze. Other distributions based on this same kernel seem to cause the same problems (admitedly many used Ubuntu as their base).

What I'm wondering is, is it possible to install Edgy (which uses Kernel 2.6.17) and then using Synaptic, lock that particular Kernel in and THEN do an upgrade to Feisty, Gutsy or Hardy etc? Will this upgrade to a newer version of Ubuntu but still retain the 2.6.17 kernel of Edgy?

I hope this makes sense and someone can throw me a line!

Cheers all in advance

D
