I want to install Ubuntu 8.04 from a CD that was downloaded from the Net. I want to set it up as a dual boot system with Window XP. When I get to the point where the partitions must be changed and a new one added, I'm stuck.

There are two options (as I now recall) for partitioning, custom and manual. It's not clear which I should select. I tried both, but the next step is also unclear so I don't know how to proceed.

Are there on-line instructions for conducting this partition? If not, what's the best thing to do?

Thank you.

Do you already have an empty partition that you can install Ubuntu on? If not, you need to resize the partition that XP is on, making room for Ubuntu. And before you resize anything, ALWAYS backup your personal files in case something goes wrong.

After reading the references given above, I tried to install Ubuntu without partitioning. I tried it with both Ubuntu 8.04 and Kubuntu 8.04 CDs. Neither would install. I then downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 and burned it onto a DVD. Then I apparently got it to install, but when I rebooted and selected Ubuntu, it said:

Booting GRLDR...

followed by a blinking cursor. Then nothing else happened. There was no indication that anything was going on with the program.

What to do?

I really need some help and advice to get Ubuntu to run.
