After I ugpraded to Ubuntu 8.10 from 8.04, I've had a bunch of problems.

I can't open any old OpenOffice documents because it says I am not the owner (I am logged in as the root user). When I open firefox, it is blank and nothing really works except for viewing websites. All my bookmarks and such are gone. Thunderbird does the same thing.

When I log in, I get an error that says something about the permissions being ignored, I think it said I should have it set to 644 but I don't know what that is.

Can anyone please help? I'm new to Ubuntu. It kind of sounds like my profile was lost or I am somehow using a new one now even though I'm using the same account.

Probably the permissions are wrong. Check about the command chmod.
I'm not on Linux and not very familiar with chmod. In the terminal type help chmod or info chmod or man chmod. This way you should learn a lot and undersatnd what 644 is. If you check the properties of a file (right click), and chek at the permissions, what is displayed?
