Here's one that's bugged me for a long time. When I download, or create, a new desktop wallpaper, in order to use it I have to go to Appearance, Background, Add.... find the file and select it.

Is there a directory (other than /usr/share/backgrounds) where I can just dump my background files, and have them automatically appear in he Background control panel?

It doesn't appear that gnome organizes wallpapers this way. It would be nice it you could tell the appearance applet to offer all images in a given directory. But instead you have to manually add each one.
