what's wrong with compiz and compiz-core that's giving everyone a black screen?

If what you mean by "everyone" is you, then you might be right. I don't know of anyone else that has had issues with black screens with compiz active other than a few people who were using the incorrect Nvidia driver.

Only "blank Screens" i know about are due to Nvidia drivers on laptops pointing to a CRT by default instead of the LCD screen when installed.
