What was/is the original Linux OS?

I was wondering if anyone knew what the original linux operating system was and is there a updated version of it somewhere?

i believe the very first was slack followed by debian. however im most likely completely wrong because im too lazy to google/wikipedia the answer

i was pretty much right. the first linux distro was dropped then renamed to slackware

Slackware is the oldest distribution still in development, but a very close second is Debian.

Linux is a kernel. Linux had a name before it was Linux, Freax, but it was renamed without Linus's knowledge or permission by the person in charge of the servers it was on.

GNU was started before Linux, and bash and gcc were ported by Linus (I think). So the first Linux OS was Linux in pieces.

If you're talking about Linux, then, well, Linux + shell had to be the first OS. If you're talking about GNU/Linux, then GNU/BSD and GNU/GNU (GNU packages + GNU Kernel) predate it.

MINIX was the absolute origional. It is no longer in developement though but can still be downloaded. Super lightweight, no gui >_>
