View Full Version : [SOLVED] Finding Mugen Linux

A workmate brought WinMUGEN into work today and showed off the custom characters he'd found. I've been told MUGEN was originally a Linux project, but I haven't been able to find a linux copy for download anywhere. Google searches only brought up dead links and references to WinMUGEN.

Where could I find a linux version of MUGEN?

its possible it got bought out or something and made windows only.
but you can try it under WINE

I checked on that. It was originally a linux application. It seems the original creators, Elecbyte, abandoned the project after some people leaked one of their betas. Since then other enthusiasts have been keeping the project alive. I'm surprised it's so hard to find a linux version these days.

Try here: http://www.mugenation.com/index.php/cat=programs

Then scroll down and look for "Mugen v14.04.2002 (Linux)".

i believe there is also jmugen, a java mugen port that makes mugen cross platform portable.

Ok first off how is this solved? I downloaded the tar bzip and extracted it another tar, extract that another tar, extract that another tar, and besides all that mugen is like a 294 mb's not 2.6mb's you guys really need to do better research if your gonna suggest a file for download. Finally i cant get mugen tournament to actually work ( i have the win version) it installs in wine but when i go to play it i get this:

/home/marcus/Desktop/Screenshot-M.U.G.E.N Error.png

It acts like its gonna work the screen goes black then flashes for second then i get the afore mentioned error, im gonna do some searching so i can actually do something to help with this instead of linking fake files that werent even checked. Is there any moderation on this site? where are they? This should have been checked. Sometimes i think half the people on this site are actually fake posters who dont know what they are doing.

That file works fine for me. Perhaps you got a corrupted version?

To extract it, I simply did:

tar jxvf LinuxMugen.tar.bz2.bz2
in the directory I wanted to extract it in. The 'j' is the 'bz2' filter. The 'x' means extract. The 'v' is verbose. The 'f' says you're giving it a file.

I checked on that. It was originally a linux application. It seems the original creators, Elecbyte, abandoned the project

Mugen was originally for DOS, in 1999. It moved to Linux in 2001 to get around some limits with it and Allegro. (The linux move, predictably fractured their user base, which at the time were either DBZ kids, and people dreaming of making Marvel vs Capcom sequels)

Also, Elecbyte is back (http://elecbyte.com).

doesn't work on ps3
when i enter the code with both .bZ2's i get "no such file or directory"
with only one .bz2 i get "not a valid bzip file"
not that this would run on ps3 ubuntu anyway

The file from this page was a little bug. If you extract the archive with bzip2 -d you get a .tar.bz2-extension file not only .tar

By renaming it, you can extract it with tar.

I had no problems with this but when I add people and try to play with or against them I get a black screen at vs screen and it quits automatically.

For people having trouble with the tar.bz2.bz2 file:

Open up terminal and type:

cd ~/path/to/downloadfoderso for me, this was:

cd ~/Personal/Downloadsand then, still in the terminal:

tar jxvf LinuxMugen.tar.bz2.bz2

That link no longer works.

Can someone provide a working link please?

Edit: A very kind user (winh8r) provided me with this link: http://www.mgbr.net/index.php?lang=PTBR&end=multi&id=131&sid=25827

I was wondering. Is MUGEN legal or illegal?

Or is the MUGEN engine legal and the characters, stages, etc. illegal? It all seems to be a grey area.

Personally I see no problem with MUGEN.
