View Full Version : [ubuntu] 8.10 - USB modem Speedtouch 330 no longer works

After upgrade to 8.10 I got one nasty surprise - no internet connection at all. I was quite happy with my SpeedTouch 330 v4 USB modem, which had been working perfectly since Ubuntu 6.10 and even Windows 2000 before.
This issue was not mentioned in the release notes, but it was known (as I found too late) well before the official release. Seems, no one is really concerned about this.
So a couple of questions (actually help requests):
1. How to get SpeedTouch 330 working with Ubuntu 8.10 (I had to recover an ancient Windows to get on-line, so for any download I need an exact URI, not just "it is in repositories"). The modem itself seems to work fine, but there is no ppp0 device any more.

2. If 1. is impossible, how to degrade to 8.04 without breaking everything and starting from scratch.

Any help is very appreciated. Thanks.

Some more information about the topic. I found a guide I had followed about two years ago to set up the modem:
http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/ubuntu/index.html
Tested all that files and found them in the proposed locations.
There is something not right about USB devices at all. I can neither get the list with
lsusb
nor open the /proc/bus/usb/ folder in Nautilus. In both cases the program hangs. But at least the keyboard, mouse and funny 3D sound USB audio dongle work well (they are all USB). The modem shows both lights - USB and ADSL - green, but there is no ppp0 device, and UsbAdslModemManager cannot find it either.

Any ideas?

Temporary solution - boot with the older kernel. Grub still allowed to boot some remaining kernels, I tried 2.6.24-21-generic and all my modem problems vanished.

For more information to make your speedtouch 330 work with ubuntu 8.10 you must install 'ubuDSL' and change the 'speedtch.ko' who have a bug.

http://www.ubudsl.com/ (easy to use. And a graphical mode.)
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19200501/speedtch.ko.tar.bz2

* In a console write:

bunzip2 -c speedtch.ko.tar.bz2 | tar xvf -
sudo cp speedtch.ko /lib/modules/2.6.27-7-generic/kernel/drivers/usb/atm

* Then install ubuDSL and follow the step to step.

So now it's the end and it's done!Bye!
