.ICEauthority problem

I just ran across this identical problem in Intrepid Ibex and the fix described here didn't work.

Any further suggestions?

I've discovered I can't open GIMP or get any sound for external devices (CD, DVD, and iPod).

Help?

previous versions of gnome the cure had been to rename the ice authority file to .bak and rebooting recreated the file. I'd check to see if there are any more up to date suggestions using google first.
