I have a Thinkpad T20 700 Mhz P3 512 mb RAM 8 MB S3 graphics

Had 8.04 for a long time, never encountered any problems with booting.

Upgraded to 8.10, now it will only make it to the login screen every fourth try or so. It is not consistent.

After login (if it gets there) it works fine.

Any suggestions on how to make it to login every time?

Same happened to me after upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10.

If you keep pressing ESC, it will eventually get to the login, but in my case the system was not functional (keyboard and mosue didn't work).

If you boot in safe mode (or whatever it's called), you will see why it's stalling on boot. In my case, it was unable to find anything related to IO: keyboard, mouse, drives etc.
