I have been trying to install Ubuntu or Kubuntu 8.10 with no luck. On the live CD the screen goes blank and freezes before the login screen (both Ubuntu and Kubuntu).
I installed the alternate CD for Kubuntu. The install went fine. It loaded as far as the login screen but then the keyboard and mouse froze.
I then tried installing Ubuntu Studio and this worked great (there is no login screen for Ubuntu Studio). As soon as I installed Kubuntu using synaptic though, I had the exact same problem.
I have concluded this must be a bug with GDM or KDM but I am not sure what has been causing it.
I have been using Ubuntu since 2004 and this has been the first time I have not been able to install it.
Hardware Specs:
HP Pavilion A830N desktop
3.2Ghz
1Gb RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7100 GS
Trendnet TEW something or other wireless card
