There is 5.1 audio. Intrepid ibex has sound issues with certain or all hardware. I am in hardy.

first off, system->preferences->sound->devices

change all to alsa-advanced linux sound architecture and under default mixer tracks, use audigy 2..well this one is mine but it must say "alsa mixer"

now double click on the speaker icon in the taskbar. edit->preferences and put a checkmark on everything.

now you can manipulate all your pcm's to full minus the actual pcm and keep surround, front, lfe, rear, side to full.

open up terminal and do a

speaker-test -D surround51 -c 6

or a

speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -c6 -l1 -twav

or you can do this before.

anyway, also your application needs to be configured. like xine or amarok, you can get 5.1 audio you just need to select alsa and 5.1

apparently, your hardware does not work.

do a lspci -v and see what your audio card says. also post what you think your actual hardware is.

your hardware seems to be working fine. It is just a matter of configuring.

http://ph.ubuntuforums.com/showthread.php?t=770028
this one may help since you are using pulseaudio and not alsa.

when you opened up your mixer, or in sound, what mixer are you using? do you have the options checked to view all bars? THis is fixable...its just you dont have your stuff configured. make sure you edited the sudo gedit /etc/pulse/daemon.conf
