new to this. Only know windows.

I'm trying to put Ubuntu on my Girlfriend's computer
that has a misbehaving bootleg windows on it.

3 downloads.

Still no luck. Tried 8.10 - no validation code
available so there was no way of knowing if
it was corrupt. CD didn't work anyway so spend
another 2 hours downloading and writing 8.04 to CD.

Why do these CD writing programs crash windows when
writing ISO with ubuntu? happens with different
programs. Weird.

All bad luck apparently.

Now its "invalid cd detected" DC is 8.04. trying to
boot in XP because I don't talk in 1's and zeros. All
I can do is windows. Point. click. Not stupid. Just
only know Windows.

Validated fine after downloading with winmd55sum.
Perfect download made CD that does not work at all.

12 hours invested. No results. What do I do?

The md5sum hashes for intrepid can be found here (http://ubuntu.mirrors.tds.net/releases/intrepid/MD5SUMS) make sure they match before burning. What speed did you burn the iso to disk at? I would recommend x4 or less if you have not already done so. Try another burn program like imgburn (http://www.imgburn.com/) to burn the iso to disk and see how you go.
