Horrible New Fonts

After upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 8.10 the fonts look worse. It's a small change but I can't stand it. Italicized text doesn't look as good and in general it's much harder to read. Is my old configuration backed up somewhere? Everything was fine till I changed the preferences in appearances, and now I can't get my old settings back!
