I'm trying to upgrade to 8.10 from 8.04 and I'm having dependency issues.

Here are the errors:
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done

So trying to remove libesd-alsa0 does the following:
$ sudo apt-get remove libesd-alsa0
