while distro hopping i was visting a BSD forum asking about it...i saw someone signature that said

Linux is not UNIX! Face it! It is not an insult. It is fact: GNU is a recursive acronym for “GNU's Not UNIX”.

what do you think about that?

Wait, does this mean that LAME ain't an mp3 encoder as well? I'm confused.

I thought that was refering to the license, not that it isn't Unix. And Linux is refered to as "unix-like", not "unix-based", mainly because it costs money to have your OS refered to as unix-based.

Linux isn't UNIX because it's not certified UNIX.

WINE means WINE is not an emulator...

Well, no. FreeBSD is certainly Unix-based, even if it isn't certified. The bottom line is that Linux isn't Unix because Unix isn't a kernel. GNU's Not Unix because RMS likes recursive acronyms and wanted to emphasize the fact that no code was shared.

That said, your average GNU/Linux distro is for all intents and purposes a Unix implementation, and anyone saying otherwise is just being a pain.

Actually it was named Linux because the creator is Linus Torvalds...

Actually it was named Linux because the creator is Linus Torvalds...

And because he was probably influenced by Minix.

WINE means WINE is not an emulator...

And it isn't. In a technical sense, it's closer to virtualization...

I think it's a perfectly true and valid statement.

Arch uses the more simple BSD way in its setup.

For all that statement is worth. :lolflag:

Linus' Unix.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the original kernel was stored in a directory called linus/, but the server admin changed it to linux/ because it sounded cooler.

Torvalds thought calling his new kernel "Linux" would be too egotistical. He planned to call it "Freex". Fortunately, the sysadmin of his ftp server persuaded him otherwise.

Isn't BSD something to do with sadomasochism? ;)
