if I were to install ooo (open office) in my xubuntu would i be slowing down my xubuntu? i mean would i be bringing in a tonne of libraries into my xubuntu with ooo? to my understanding ooo is most compatible with gnome.

Installing libraries doesn't slow anything down unless those libraries are loaded. You can see what dependencies OpenOffice.org will bring in by going into Synaptic and marking OpenOffice.org for installation.

OpenOffice.org is a big, unwieldy application suite, however. It even has an entire Space Invaders game in it, bulking it out even more. Its developers don't take streamlining seriously.

I tend to avoid it. AbiWord is a more suitable word processor for Xfce. Or LaTeX.

Um... How do you get to this space invaders game?

Sigh. See Ubuntu bug 281027 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/281027).
