When I go to install ubuntu, it wants me to make a new partition table, yet windows boots up fine. I wanted to dual boot, and not lose all of my windows data. From what this looks like now it isn't possible. I was really looking forward to using Linux.

If you downloaded 8.10 and have this problem you could try 8.04. 8.04 has Long Term Support. Then you can try 8.10 in a month after some bugs have been fixed.
