So, I pop in the cd, start up the installer, and after the partitioner starts it shows no devices. Gparted, fdisk -l show nothing. There is also nothing that looks like the HDD in /dev (/dev/sda when I installed Hardy). I'm posting what looks like part of the problem as reported by dmesg:

[ 14.092021] ata1: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=-19)
[ 18.740022] ata1: COMRESET failed (errno=-16)

The PC still boots into Hardy Heron fine, and Hardy LiveCD still recognizes the HDD fine. Thanks for any help!

I just had a similar problem when trying to install on my new mother board. Geforce 8200 64-bit amd. It can't load any thing on or properly use my sata hard drives or sata dvdr. I can only assume its the board cuz I tried to install ubuntu 8.10, mint 6, debain 5.0, and then finally fedora 10 and none could work with the sata drives. Both hard drives I have used before with the 64 bit ubuntu 7.10. and 8.4. the dvdr is a new samsung sh-s203. I finally had to install the OS with an old IDE cable on a older hard drive.
