move maximized windows

Hi,
Is it possible to use a maximized window in gnome, as in KDE?
A related question: is it possible to set up gnome desktops (or workspaces?) such that if I move a window partially out of one workspace, it does NOT appear in the neighbouring workspace?

The default behaviour for maximized windows seems to be the following:
When dragging with Alt+leftmouse, one needs to drag it to a tremendous distance, then
1) the window switches to unmaximized state
2) and one can move it.
What I would like is that one could drag the window without changing its size (in this case it would of course be partially off from the workspace)
