Hi:

I am an experienced Linux user (6 years) and I use Ubuntu 8.04 on a Thinkpad T60 laptop. I recently did an apt-get update and compiz stopped working as a result. It is a weird problem and it goes as follows.

I have compiz turned off now. but when I do turn it on from System->Preference->Appearance->Visual Effects, the screen goes whitish-blank. X is still running and some icons when I switch windows using ALT-TAB for instance though I can't really see the windows. I am able to switch back to None by pressing ESC and everything is fine.

My graphics card is
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X1400

Compiz was enabled and working properly till last week when I made the updates. I feel certain that I'm not the only person facing a problem like this as I think I have seen a similar problem before. I think it could be something to do with some packages which were installed. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Aravind.
