View Full Version : [ubuntu] system failure after 8.10 upgrade

Today I upgraded my system (a Sony Vaio TR minilaptop) to 8.10. But when I rebooted, I was unable to start Ubuntu.

The system starts to load, until I get the lines:

...fail!
ALSA is not active, cannot start TiMidity++ ALSA midi emulation

After which, everything just hangs, the system does not load.

I tried rebooting in repair mode, and I was able to get a terminal login.

But I have no idea what I might enter in the terminal that could fix this.

So at present my machine is totally unusable,

Please help -- can anyone suggest how to repair this?

thanks
