8.10 wont go past login screen.

When I try and login, it hangs, I can move my cursor, but there aren't any buttons. The background loads though....any thoughts?

Any number of us are having problems with 8.10 compiz. My thinkpad gets a black or tan screen instead of a desktop. The workaround in Launchpad Bug #259385 is:

boot in rescue mode
select root shell prompt
sudo apt-get remove compiz
sudo apt-get remove compiz-core
exit
resume normal boot

If later on you want to try compiz you can install it with Synaptic. As of today compiz still freezes my pc. The "official" fix is blacklisting some graphics hardware so that compiz won't start.

p.s. might help if you listed your hardware

Create a new user and log in with that user.
If this fixes the problem, then it might be some leftover files in some directories in your home folder ( $HOME/.compiz/ ?)

I had that same problem and that worked perfect for me to get back my desktop.

If I do add Compiz back from Synaptic, will it cause problems?
