Once you have it installed, please post some screen shots here for everyone to see. Maybe even some screen shots of customizations.

Here's a pair screenshots I took after upgrading to the RC last week. The first is right after the upgrade, the second after getting AWN running with Xcompmgr. I finally saw that Nvidia has beta versions of new legacy drivers working, and I'm working on getting Compiz running again.

Thanks for the post!

I am wondering if ATI drivers have been sorted in this release.

Any more screenshots from others?

DJ_Peng & Usufruct,

Any of those is using the default Ubuntu theme, right?
I was under the impression that it was going to be darker.

Mine are using a now slightly borked Mac4Lin theme. They did make a darker Human theme, called NewHuman during testing but now called DarkRoom.

I'm not a great fan of the default look, so this is how it looks now, with an appearance theme from Gnome-look called Shiki-Brave.

The new default background isn't bad though, pity about that weird one there was back during the Betas.

Compiz works too, but due to the weird way my laptops keyboard layout works I can't get a screenshot of it with the cube.

Rules:

Forum guidelines on content apply. In other words, safe for kids and safe for work. If you have doubts about the images appropriateness, please don't post it (some people are at work or are uncomfortable with some images). The easiest way to cover up minor things would be to put an open window in front of it.
Try not to quote embedded images; take a moment to snip them out.
Off-topic posts will be edited or moved.
Thumbnail your image, or use the forum's attachment system. Full-size embedded images are annoying and will be snipped mercilessly.
Take a moment and tell everyone the details of your desktop, such as the theme name, the wallpaper name, the icons and any programs you're using in the image.

As you can see in the lower right of the screen, it's not November here yet, that comes in 7 hours. However, in honor of Ubuntu 8.10 coming out, I tried to make a brown/earthy desktop. I had my Tint looking a lot different than it does now, but I just like it too much the way it was, so I just changed a few of the colors on it. I went through a lot of brown wallpapers before I found this one. If you would like the configuration files for any of my applications, just ask, I would be more than glad to post them up.

I never thought I'd be using GNOME, but now that I'm on Ibex, I'm using it a lot more than KDE because it more closely resembles what KDE used to be.

Okay, so I took WIIAN's MurrineGlow Red theme and I changed the colors in the Appearance dialog. I replaced the panel backgrounds with some really old kicker backgrounds I made a long time ago for KDE.

The wallpaper is the same as when I was on KDE: Flora Nine (http://delta909.deviantart.com/art/Flora-Nine-90794895?moodonly=1)

The Emerald theme is a mod of my Elegent Curve theme, which I have yet to upload.

I have Cairo-dock on the side.

And finally, my icons are Hydroxygen Red.

**** why the November thread started so long ago? I was hoping to get on first page this month :).

First is my desktop, the other is my eee. Nothing important theme wise, just took clearlooks and applied a grayish tone for selected stuff, then installed the tango-installer or whatever it is called to use the gray variation. For the small one, I installed ubuntu-eee (whatever that is called now) and modded the remix launcher (by deleting some files in the folder where it finds graphics :) )

And the background... I themed my both computers on Les Luthiers, there are white variations of those available on deviant art, if you want the link or the black versions, you may ask, however I doubt you would.

It doesn't matter where it goes. Here's an example:

menu.border.width: 1
menu.overlap: -5

Well I here are mine this month. First one is my notebook which is running Ubuntu 8.10:

GTK: Shiki-Brave
Default 8.10 wallpaper as that goes really good with dark themes
Icons: Meliae

For my desktop it is running Ubuntu 8.10 with:

GTK: Dust (awesome theme, love it)
Random wallpaper which can be found here (http://www.kde-look.org/CONTENT/content-files/25331-night4.jpg)
Icons: Eikon

For my EeeBox it is running Xubuntu 8.10 with:

GTK: MurrinaStormCloud
Wallpaper: I really like the Windows7 one that someone made online (w/o the logo of course ;) )
Icon: GNOME-Brave

All three have Compiz-Fusion running and Screenlets (but the notebook has the widget layer on top of the Screenlets).

especially for its ability to expand a window horizontally or vertically as an alternative option to maximizing. it might be a happy medium between traditional window managment and tiling window managment.

especially for its ability to expand a window horizontally or vertically as an alternative option to maximizing. it might be a happy medium between traditional window managment and tiling window managment.

emerald can do that too (with right and middle click on the maximize button).

@razorlives: near-default GNOME desktops usually revolt me, but that is epic. Something about the wallpaper works great with everything else.

@voteforpedro36: a good example of how panels can offset a wallpaper in excellent ways.

Arch Linux, as close as I can get to the Windows 2000/Windows XP Classic theme.

IceWM with the WinClassic2 theme off box-look.org, standard Redmond and Raleigh themes found in the Arch GTK1.2 and GTK2 engine packages, and the downloadable Bliss wallpaper found via Wikipedia. GTK1.2 version of Firefox 2 with the "LooksFamiliar" theme applied.

volwheel for the taskbar volume control, MS Core Fonts plus the Tahoma font I found ... somewhere. Xfe set to the Windows theme and the panel colors set to match the GTK theme, XMMS with the Winamp skin (gnome-look.org), Sylpheed, XChat, GPicView, Galculator, rxvt-unicode, Leafpad, EasyTag, scrot, xscreensaver set to the morph3d screensaver.

Am I forgetting anything? ;)

There is a a way to do this, but you have to cheat a little. You have to make shortcuts to the actual folders. Then, you can change the icons of the shortcuts to whatever you want.

Well, most of my folders inside my Home directory are shortcuts anyway (as they link to actual folders inside of a separate partition), but still I can't seem to find any option to change their icon on the folder properties dialog in Thunar. Am I missing something?

Upgraded to Intrepid Ibex and finally gave in to the whole brown "Dust" and "DarkRoom" hype, so I made a "Shiki-Dust" theme to go along with that.

I haven't really uploaded it anywhere, so you guys can get it here if you want to try it (needs Murrine SVN or Ubuntu Intrepid):

Does anybody know how to get rid of the clutter in side pane in nautilus.

I would basically like to remove all entries except for home/desktop/file system/trash/bookmarks.

Thanks

Well, I think this will be it for the rest of the month. New wallpaper and added conky since the previous post; this setup seems easy on the eyes, warm and unobstructive enough. I might have to mess around with conky a bit more, though.

GTK: Shiki-Colors Dust Mod

Conky: Conky-Colors Light Human

As usual there are many dark desktops. Does anyone use a pure white one? I used to (see here (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/preview.php?preview=2&id=76676&file1=76676-1.png&file2=76676-2.png&file3=76676-3.png&name=Lucidity+Emerald)), and i thought it was pretty good.

Mine. Attached for easy reference.

I think a lot of people use dark desktops to save their eyes during late-night computing. I went white to avoid TOO many late nights. If it's at the point when my eyes hurt looking at my monitor, it's time to go to sleep (such as right now).

Dark desktops are great at night, but SUCK during the day.

Wallpaper: Flora Nine (tanmod, original version available here (http://delta909.deviantart.com/art/Flora-Nine-90794895))

What do you use as a method for rotation?
I use Wallpaper Tray (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WallpaperTray). It crashes more often than Drapes does, but I love being able to put my cursor over it and get the filename. With a few hundred wallpapers in active rotation I can forget which image is which. I added a launcher to the panel drawer so I can restart it when needed.

Icewm with the Eidolon Icewm and Gtk theme and the Oxygen Refit (Black) icons.

Does anyone know how to make the taskbar in Icewm smaller? According to the official documentation it should follow the size of the menu icon (icewm.xpm), but I can't get it any smaller than this, no matter how small I make that icon.

Hello I have recently embarked on a holy crusade of conversion to linux and what most people really like when they first try ubuntu/kubuntu/xubuntu ... is that they have a much greater freedom to configure their desktop theme/icons/window borders... but unfortunately they find the task a little daunting and sometimes just don't have the inspiration, so I was wondering if you could upload a screenshot of your current desktop environment with a few links on what to download to get to that result and maybe a few instructions I'm sure that would really help us less artistic folk thanks a lot for your contribution.

Oh and don't forget to mention if you are using KDE/Gnome/Xfce or other

http://www.gnome-look.org <- for GNOME stuff
http://www.kde-look.org <- for KDE
http://www.xfce-look.org <- XFCE
http://www.box-look.org <- for flux/open/blackbox and others

These are pretty much THE sites for desktop customization with the various desktop environments, and it's almost a given that any theme names you see here will be from one of those sites. I have the GNOME and Box variants in my Speed Dial.

Not very good I know but I just thought i would show you anyway: I use gnome i basically downloaded everything from gnome look (http://www.gnome-look.org/) for the controls i basically got linsta-gtk2, for the window borders I got metativo 2.0(I got this from gnome art but it's listed in the gnome look website too) For the icons i got aer-os-xk (really recommend those they're very diverse) and for the pointer i just used the pointer you usually get with kde called oxy-white

i have animated icons and background... animated window border and titles
That would annoy me so much. I don't quite know what I would do, I might just lose my mind.

I already posted earlier in the thread after upgrading to Ibex, but decided to switch over to Shiki-Colors recently from Dust.

Here are my clean and busy screenshots (click for full size).

GTK Theme: Shiki-Human (with Dust highlight color)
Icons: Crashbit Ubuntu
Fonts: Liberation Sans

I took the photo in Laguna Beach, CA USA in September 2007.

dwm, urxvt, htop. the wallpaper is my tribute to the wise decision not to mess up my glorious arch installation with a fleeting curiosity for slackware (which i almost called 'flatware', for some unknown reason).

Coward :P

At least you use dwm, so something must be working pretty well there in the brain.

I thought about trying Slackware once. Then I remembered how even Gentoo was kind of a pain.

Gentoo is much harder than Slackware, in my opinion.

Gentoo just expects it's users (and potential users) to be able to read and follow instructions... Although you don't usually see anyone using "RTFM" when replying to noobs, we do tend to provide links to said manuals (often the specific section) and ask them to read through them before asking more questions. If the answer is a one liner, then we usually provide it (along with a link to the relevant manual... ;))

Since I'm here, I'll go ahead and post a screenshot too. :D

i thought so too, but they are really subtle... just making the switch between windows a bit more pleasing... and menu items popping up bit nicer

overall i'm pleased... i will get tired soon and try to go minimalistic, i'm sure, but for now it suffices :)

Pretty awesome but might consider matching the terminal background colour to your WM theme and disabling the scrollbar.
