I found myself looking through the pages of this thread and I threw a bunch of ideas together for my desktop. My inspiration came mainly from "What is in a name?"'s post on the third page (if it wasn't obvious lol). We'll see how long I stick with this one.

Feel free to ask for any other info...

Hello! I've been learning Java in an introductory uni class but decided to take a look at Python as well. As a first program, I wanted to make something simple and helpful. So, here is a tool that lets you install fonts locally, and makes the .fonts folder if you don't have it. Please give it a shot and let me know of any bugs and what I should do with this!

91401

To run, right click the file and go to properties, in the third tab "permissions" there should be an option to set it as executing. Then just double click and profit.

EDIT: I know this is the screenshot thread, but there's so much hubbub about fonts, and I really like this recurring thread.

Sure thing. (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Ubuntu+Dragon+%2B+Windows+Dragon+wallpaper?content =69464) I found it under '1440x900,' which is my resolution, on GNOME-Look. I'm not sure if there are other sizes.

can anyone tell me how to brighten the close/max/min buttons on an openbox theme? here is the themerc. i need the color when the button is hovered to be white and light grey when not
According to line 73 of the theme file, the image should already be white when hovered:

window.active.button.hover.image.color: #ffffff

and per line 49, the image should normally be light grey:

window.active.button.unpressed.image.color: #aaaaaa

I'm not positive, but this looks like the Elachisto333 theme which I submitted awhile back. With that theme, the images were actually blank xbm files. In order for the button images to show up, copy the following files from a theme whose buttons you like:

close.xbm
iconify.xbm
max.xbm

and paste them in

~/.themes/THEME NAME/openbox-3/

I'm currently trying out a new theme and I made the switch to the newest Amarok beta. It's surprisingly flakey considering it's the third beta and there's talk of a final release soon. The dbus interface sucks. Porting my little widget made it about 10 times as complex. Amarok only returns the track's current time in milliseconds. I came up with this to convert it. I'd be interested to see if anyone has any improvements. I'm going for most compact code.

milTime=`qdbus org.kde.amarok /Player PositionGet`
seconds=$((milTime/1000 % 60))
[ `echo ${#seconds}` -lt 2 ] && echo $(($milTime/60000)):0$seconds ||\
echo $(($milTime/60000)):$seconds

Not much change since October; just killing some time while Xubuntu 8.10 installs on my laptop.

Ubuntu 8.04, Openbox, tint2, trayer, conky.
Iocns are Eikon2, wallpaper = Duality_Wide_by_Osox (available on Deviant Art I believe).

I found some nice icons to go with my theme and apparently I've discovered a bug in dbus-daemon. Last time I checked, it was using 800 MB of RAM. :(

As grateful as I am that you credited me in your sig, it's not necessary. I'm not that big of an egomaniac. Also, I am overjoyed that you're finally using the proper blue; that color is ripped directly from the website, and it started to bug me whenever I would see royal blue used in people's sigs.

I've actually switched from ncmpc to ncmpcpp (also called ncmpc++), which is almost the same program, but has some new features which you can see on their website (http://unkart.ovh.org/ncmpcpp/). I'm not sure if it is the Ubuntu repositories, but it wasn't in [extra] or [community] for Arch; I ended up building it from the ArchLinux User-community Repository (or AUR (http://aur.archlinux.org/)).

It also takes less than one to two minutes to upload it as an attachement instead of posting the entire screenshot in the post

why would you say that..

if everybody could post the entire images into the thread, instead of attachments, it would make things much easier

you would not need to click on every single picture just to get a good look

you could simply scroll through the pages and see everything that is posted without ever having the need to click on a link to see what somebody has

so i ask, what harm comes from posting the images directly into the threads?

none that i can see

also if you use photobucket or some other image hosting site to post images instead of uploadeing them as attachments im pretty sure it would save on ubunutu's server space

Rules:

Forum guidelines on content apply. In other words, safe for kids and safe for work. If you have doubts about the images appropriateness, please don't post it (some people are at work or are uncomfortable with some images). The easiest way to cover up minor things would be to put an open window in front of it.
Try not to quote embedded images; take a moment to snip them out.
Off-topic posts will be edited or moved.
Thumbnail your image, or use the forum's attachment system. Full-size embedded images are annoying and will be snipped mercilessly.
Take a moment and tell everyone the details of your desktop, such as the theme name, the wallpaper name, the icons and any programs you're using in the image.

:) :)

Worth repeating.

seems reasonable to me. You can still see the details, yet it doesn't require lots of side scrolling by anyone who's not using a 17 inch monitor.

Arch with Xmonad, not much has changed really mainly just a new wallpaper and some transparency which makes urxvt unreadable unless your focuses on that window which actually I don't seem to mind. Otherwise I probably should change some of the text colors including the background system tray but laziness wins today...:)

"White man's burden, Lloyd! White man's burden!" This is what Jack tells the bartender in the scene, a more or less non sequitur statement, as it seems. Perhaps he jokes upon "burden's" assonance with "bourbon"? On the other hand, the film subtly refers to the Native American genocide and racism...

Sorry for being off-topic (although someone already added a comment suggesting a thread on Kubrick's films), it's just that I love this film! My BIG favourite.

I've been working on my first GTK theme ever.

GTK: Murrine Redhead
Icons: Hydroxygen
Wallpaper: Between Us (http://thesong.deviantart.com/art/Between-us-77483759)
Firefox theme: Elementary
Emerald Theme: Redhead (a mod of my COffee and Cream theme)
Font: Corbel 9

The GTK theme is nothing more than a color modification of the theme MurrineCream. I'm going to be working more on the actual theme part of it in the next few days. I'm new at making themes, so be patient, please!

How did you get your Hydroxygen icons to work? "Appearance" refuses to install it (yes, AFTER customizing it).

If the Appearance settings dialog is not installing the icon theme from the tarball (e.g. hydroxygen.tar.bz), simply extract it and move the extracted folder to /home/username/.icons

Yeah, what's up with that? It seems that if you've already installed a theme/iconset you can't upgrade it by drag n' dropping and it will say "can't overwrite folder" or something. Has a bug report been filed yet? (This only happens to me in Intrepid)

The past 24 hours have been quite nice, though Mesa/compositing is horribly slow for some reason (I even went as far as copying my xorg.conf from Ubuntu, it doesn't seem to have helped), but as Ubuntu's been freezing up recently (before updating to Jaunty, and after months of problem-free Intrepid testing), I think I'll be using Fedora until X gets a major bump in Jaunty.

Fedora is a really good distro, but the complete aversion they have towards non-oss software/drivers can be a bit discouraging if you just want your stuff to work.

There aren't many cases where a GUI app would be transparent, and there isn't much point in a screenshot of nothing but the app.

gimp gets floated rather than tiled (there is usually an option to float instead of tile in a lot of the tiling wm's).

Nice, I might give wmii a go first and then dwm later. Maybe I should wait till after my exams, I can image myself spending a lot of time configuring this. I wonder how it would work with my TwinView setup with different sized monitors.

I've tried the mouseless browsing extension before when I wanted to use j/k for navigating without full vimerator, but never got fully into using it. With default Firefox you can use ' to begin typing a link name and enter or ctrl-enter to open it, but this doesn't work for image links and can be a pain if links have the same or similar name so I find myself still having to use a mouse a lot.

i'm trying to cut down on my mouse usage. i'm fairly certain it has contributed to a nerve problem in my shoulder. elinks is great, but no images or videos, vimperator is too overboard, so this mouseless extension looks like it cut down on some of the mousing.

if you get around to trying dwm, if you want to configure it, you have to configure the source code (very simple), so you might want to download it from the suckless site. i didn't even install mine. i just run it from my home directory using a little launch 'thing' (is it really a script?). i have a bunch of different versions of my setup, so all i have to do is change the version number in the launch 'thing'.

Awesome gives fantastic dual monitor support as well as being an excellent hybrid between tiling and the more well known floating wms while also allowing those last few holdouts to make good use of their mouse :).

As for guides, there's the man page (below). Otherwise, I'd be happy to answer any questions, either in a separate thread or by PM.

DWM(1) DWM(1)

NAME
dwm - dynamic window manager

SYNOPSIS
dwm [-v]

DESCRIPTION
dwm is a dynamic window manager for X. It manages windows in tiled,
monocle and floating layouts. Either layout can be applied dynamically,
optimising the environment for the application in use and the task per‐
formed.

In tiled layouts windows are managed in a master and stacking area. The
master area contains the window which currently needs most attention,
whereas the stacking area contains all other windows. In monocle layout
all windows are maximised to the screen size. In floating layout win‐
dows can be resized and moved freely. Dialog windows are always managed
floating, regardless of the layout applied.

Windows are grouped by tags. Each window can be tagged with one or mul‐
tiple tags. Selecting certain tags displays all windows with these
tags.

dwm contains a small status bar which displays all available tags, the
layout, the title of the focused window, and the text read from stan‐
dard input. A floating window is indicated with an empty square and a
maximised floating window is indicated with a filled square before the
windows title. The selected tags are indicated with a different color.
The tags of the focused window are indicated with a filled square in
the top left corner. The tags which are applied to one or more windows
are indicated with an empty square in the top left corner.

dwm draws a small border around windows to indicate the focus state.

OPTIONS
-v prints version information to standard output, then exits.

source code. This keeps it fast, secure and simple.

SEE ALSO
dmenu(1)

BUGS
The status bar may display EOF when dwm has been started by an X ses‐
sion manager like xdm(1), because those close standard output before
executing dwm.

Java applications which use the XToolkit/XAWT backend may draw grey
windows only. The XToolkit/XAWT backend breaks ICCCM-compliance in
recent JDK 1.5 and early JDK 1.6 versions, because it assumes a repar‐
enting window manager. As a workaround you can use JDK 1.4 (which
doesn't contain the XToolkit/XAWT backend) or you can set the following
environment variable (to use the older Motif backend instead):
AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit.

GTK 2.10.9+ versions contain a broken Save-As file dialog implementa‐
tion, which requests to reconfigure its window size in an endless loop.
However, its window is still respondable during this state, so you can
simply ignore the flicker until a new GTK version appears, which will
fix this bug, approximately GTK 2.10.12+ versions.

dwm-5.2 DWM(1)

Still working on my Murrina Redhead theme. This time I altered the theme itself rather than just the colors. I made things a little more glassy. It kind of reminds me of a candy cane or something...

I'm thinking of making this theme in multiple colors if I can perfect the red one first.

Lunar Linux, the one distro I couldn't install. I might be able to handle it now (that was a year ago), but it was quite an ordeal.

Awesome gives fantastic dual monitor support as well as being an excellent hybrid between tiling and the more well known floating wms while also allowing those last few holdouts to make good use of their mouse :).

Wmii didn't recognise my TwinView at all. One of my monitors is smaller than the other so I couldn't see part of the screen. Apparently it won't work well with Xinerama either, this guys setup with separate X screens looks pretty nice though: http://files.aoeu.info/wmii/

I'll give Awesome a try then, hopefully it will recognise TwinView, if not I can try switching to Xinerama.

(Sorry about all the posts with no screenshot btw, not much to see just Gnome with MurrineGlow Gray, Eikon2 and conky.)

Nice Eva wall, do you have it in high res (1680x1050 or higher)?

I need to remind myself to make a xfwm theme for Shiki, xfce users are pretty much getting the shaft unless they use emerald.

Thanks, anyway. Perhaps I can vector it or something.

I've seen that xfwm before, but it's based on a very old version of shiki-colors metacity, so it doesn't have all the nice gradients, buttons or other sizing improvements I've made over the past few months.

How's fvwm? I've never tried it, but am pretty interested.

It's nice -- first light weight window manager I tried (Red Hat 7.0), and I always go back to it. Takes a bit of effort to get it configured, though.

Ubuntu 8.04, Fvwm with trayer, conky, mixed bag of icons.

With pulse, http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4601963&postcount=3 <-- give that a go.

Yeah handy keys to remember to start off.

Windowskey + Ctrl + R = reload config
Windowskey + Shift + Q = quit out of awesome.

i didn't know a lot about it as well mate. i simply used robber's config files and changed a few attributes like the choice of the terminal, mediaplayer, fonts and such, thats all! the config file sure luks very simple and is easy to modify! i am posting his configs here to start with! the config is optimized for a 1680x1050 screen, but its pretty easy to modify though.

http://robber49.net/files/fvwm.tar.gz

extract the file (shud be .fvwm) and move .fvwm to ur home directory. login to fvwm and it shud be pretty much up! once i got this done, i went about changing some stuff! thats all!

u can also refer this thread for some ongoing discussion about fvwm!

Great desktop, once again.
I was trying out FVWM for a while this afternoon. One thing that bothered me was that I didn't seem to be able to make the pixmaps of that lower bar stay on the screen. That is, whenever I clicked on the bar, some of the areas went transparent. Is it because I'm using ATI's fglrx drivers (the ones packaged with Intrepid)?
