After I download Java from their website, it goes to my desktop as jre-6u10-linux-i586-rpm.bin . Then I double click on it to install it and it gives me this error:

Couldn't display "/home/josh/Desktop/jre-6u10-linux-i586-rpm.bin". There is no application installed for this file type

Yes I'm a n00b and could use some assistance. Thanks again!

Josh

RPM's are not for Ubuntu. Ubuntu uses debs. Have you tried:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
