Sweet Spot

When I was running 8.04 everything worked almost perfectly (video was choppy as hell on Kubuntu), including the on board ATI video chip when playing Urban Terror. Now however, Urban Terror won't work either with, or without the ATI proprietary drivers installed.
With them installed, when I start up Urban Terror, the GUI is totally messed up. Pixels out of place, shape and just lines all over the place. But without them installed , I can see everything perfectly, except that I only get 3 FPS so everything is choppy and slow as heck. Unusable. I can't seem to find a happy medium between the two. Outside of purchasing a new video card, does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to get Urban Terror to function again ?
By the way, I have the desktop effects totally turned off, and I messed with the ATI advanced settings and couldn't get it to work.
