I am totally new to Ubuntu and Linux. I have a P3 933 machine that I wish to make into a 8.10 server. How do I prepare the hard drive for this? What file format is used?

During installation, you will be given option to prepare the hard disk for partition. There you can resize windows partition & make space for ubuntu. (I would prerfer booting the live CD, use gparted to prepare the HDD then start installation)

You might be able to apply this principles to 8.10:
