I have a HP Pavilion dv 1000 running Windows XP Home, and a Maxtor 120GB external USB hard drive. I want to install Ubuntu on the Maxtor and be able to boot the OS either at startup or from a Windows session. I don't want to partition my main hard drive (C), but I can partition the Maxtor. I will be using Ubuntu only to run Perl programs, and won't be using any of the desktop features or office-type products, so I can live with a 'light' installation. What should I do?

I believe so, but the instructions are very confusing. Can you give me a link?

Yes you did, but that link is to a domain for sale, and only contains links to advertisements for commercial products.
