The system completed the download and install of 8.1 and the only warning was the one about deleting obsolete files. When the system rebooted it goes through the point of the black screen and large "Ubuntu" and progress bar, but at the point it should present me with the login screen my display has a very washed out appearance with what appears to be the login block however, it is also very washed out looking and no cursor nor text anywhere on the screen. The cursor indicator is frozen in screen center but the palette is not spinning. Everything is locked up. I waited for 15 minutes to see if there was some file updating going on, but nothing. Only way out is to power off. Restart does the same thing. Any ideas?

You may need to disable or delete compiz. Try this link http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=962779.

Thanks. Mine is a desktop rather than a Stinkpad but it has enough similarities that it's worth a shot. I'll try it tonight when I get home.
