I recommend you back up all your files and install 8.10 fresh.

Otherwise, you have to upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10 to 8.04 to 8.10... :(

By reading the docs:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/UpgradeFromOldVersion

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GutsyUpgrades

Why is that bad? I've upgraded to 8.04 from 6.10. Took some time, but it works really smooth.

What I would do is:
Copy your ENTIRE /home/user directory to an external hard drive or something
Do a fresh install
Copy it back across, overwriting the existing files
This will mean that all your app settings will remain intact. You'll have to reinstall the apps tho.

If you aren't sure what you're doing, it is probably easiest to upgrade one step at a time using the Update Manager. It will be time consuming, but safe. :)
