I go to college, and my school's network is set up so that if you do not keep a browser open and viewing a certain webpage, you will not be able to access the internet. Therefore, I will need to run firefox while I upgrade. Does anybody know if this is safe?

If it isn't I can just just download a CD, but I'd prefer it if I didn't have to backup all my data and reformat my hard drive.

You shouldn't have a problem leaving firefox open. I do it all the time. Its always a good idea to backup your important stuff before upgrading.

Note that you can perform an upgrade from the Alternate Installer CD. You don't need to do a completely fresh install. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IntrepidUpgrades#Upgrading%20Using%20the%20Alterna te%20CD/DVD for example.
