I'd second that, Arch will fit your needs perfectly. It would definitely be lighter than Ubuntu. Just remember to follow the beginner guide and you shouldn't go wrong: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners_Guide

nVidia drivers seem pretty simple: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA

Be prepared to put about a day into getting your system up and running. After that you shouldn't have to reinstall it again though, just update your packages when you feel like it.

If you don't care about the box, then you might try linux mint fluxbox edition.

Based on ubuntu so should not be much of a challenge to change.

Based on those requirements, definitely Arch. It isn't the stablest distro out there, but it provides a good balance between control and ease of use.

opensuse is pretty interesting - good on the desktop or the server.

I believe I am now fourthing it. Just follow the Beginner's Guide and you'll be alright.
