Well, here could be your answer. Ice cover at the north pole this year, compared to last year.

Here in Ireland it's been the coldest October for 70 years.
http://www.herald.ie/national-news/coldest-october-for-over-70-years-1513253.html

September was also exceptional in that the temperature never rose above 20 degrees - apparently that hadn't happened in several decades.

And anyone who was on this miserable island in August will recall the 18th of August

Winters have been strange around here too. At one point a year or two ago we got a blizzard on October 12th. Then it didn't snow again until January!

There was something very much like snow/hail a few days ago, but not enough to make anything look very white.

I hope winter comes early this year.

Not really, I'm just basking in it. Winter has come early that's worth celebrating on its own :D.

We also had snow on Tuesday (28th) and Wednesday/Thurs overnight (very little though)

Yes, much colder than last year! I just bought a coat today. Sorely needed!

Its true that this is (seems to be so far, anyway) one of the colder and earliest winters in a while, but, seen on a bigger scale its actually one of the top 10 recorded warmest winters.
I have nothing but a verbal reference on this, from one of my Uni. Professors.

We are, however, experiencing a slightly cooler period than expected at the moment.

Actually I think the mean temperature for this month will be close to last October.

Have a browse here (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/) at the monthly statistics.

EDIT: Here's (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/2007/october.html) last October.

I've just been out buying myself loads of thermal kit for the weekend. I am now the proud owner of a fat bloke sized baby-grow! It is awesome, I tried it on a few minutes ago and I lasted about 5 minutes until I had to take it off because I was too hot.

Ireland may be close to the U.K but or weather can be very different. I work out door allot and its been a bad year. I got out my thermal wear and bought a new fleece. Going to be a fun winter :guitar:

Where are you from? 2 years ago we had a winter that was very similar, a massive snowfall of October 12th, then very mild for several months!

Last year, we didn't get anything until February (normally, it snows and sticks around the end of December).

Yesterday however, this area had a rather large snow storm. Cold and windy. My city got mostly rain, but outside, there is up to a foot of snow.

Most odd.

It'll be cold in London when the Thames freezes over. It used to freeze all the time and the ice set so hard that they used to hold "Frost Fairs" up until the 19th century.

In Oklahoma, the avg temperature in October is 65 degrees Fahrenheit. This year, it was 39. That's very strange for us. (about 4 degrees celsius)

Must be global warming.

Actually that IS it. One of the problems with global warming is that it screws up things like the gulf stream. That's why not everyone at the same latitude has the same weather patterns. Normally some of the northern regions like the British Isles get a nice big blast of warm air that moderates the temperature, but it's not happening lately.

If you actually took a look at climate change models, one of the big things is that some areas will get VERY cold as the whole weather system is interrupted.

Still, if global warming is true, worldwide temperatures should be increasing as a whole. The problem is that global temperatures are going down in recent times.

Thank you very much! They will come up with some other excuse to justify the myths of global warming.

Um, discussing the weather is common and light hearted (hopefully, no disasters) around water coolers. Debating global climate change (in any direction) is best left to the serious side of the world I think.

I love this "global warming", finally it's winter here along with the rest of Europe, september and october were HOT the last year. Wonder why they call it warming though.

And if the global warming crowd are anywhere near right, my home land will be a tropical tourist resort instead of an alpine backwater, within my lifetime!

This year for us has seemed more normal than recent years. Although calling Colorado weather normal is a horrible misrepresentation. I've seen it blizzard every month of the year here. It's been a chilly October. Hopefully it'll be cold enough this winter to kill off the pine beetles that are killing our forest. Heres hoping anyway.

It was real cold 40's F/ 7's C , the last couple of days, but Friday is going to be near 70F /21C and Saturday around 66F / 19C.

No, that's wrong. Like, very wrong. As in, climate change models predict that in some areas temperatures would drop.

This is one reason the phrase "climate change" is becoming used more, because people get confused by "global warming" and assume that since the word "warming" is used, it must mean that everywhere on the globe must be going up uniformly.

From the Times Online: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article520013.ece

“Until recently we would find giant ‘chimneys’ in the sea where columns of cold, dense water were sinking from the surface to the seabed 3,000 metres below, but now they have almost disappeared,” he said.

“As the water sank it was replaced by warm water flowing in from the south, which kept the circulation going. If that mechanism is slowing, it will mean less heat reaching Europe.”

Such a change could have a severe impact on Britain, which lies on the same latitude as Siberia and ought to be much colder. The Gulf Stream transports 27,000 times more heat to British shores than all the nation’s power supplies could provide, warming Britain by 5-8C.

You can read up on the "gulf stream shutdown" if you want more info.

No one wants to think of climate change as a reality, but in cases like this I'd say the potential consequences of inaction FAR outweighs the reverse. But that's just me.

It's been quite warn in here, actually. Usually by this time its freezing most of the day, but we haven't really even had sub-zero temperatures at night yet, so it's quite abnormal. No matter how much I despise cold weather, I'm hoping the temperature will drop a bit soon, so we'll get rid of the constant rain -- snow I can bear with, but rain gets really annoying after a few days...
